OPERATION SAFE RETURN is a program offered jointly by the DC Superior Court, Court Social Services Division (CSSD) and the DC Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services (DYRS), the District’s juvenile justice agency. The program is designed to encourage court-involved youth to surrender on outstanding custody orders.

Operation Safe Return will provide young adults with the opportunity to put past mistakes behind them and come into compliance with the terms of their probation or release status. They can re-engage with their CSSD Probation Officer, or reconnect with their DYRS Case Manager.  The program allows court-involved youth to comply with community requirements and move forward as a law-abiding citizens.

DYRS youth who have not picked up a new charge while on abscondance can return to their original status if they meet the required criteria.

To successfully complete CSSD probation or DYRS commitment, youth must follow all court-ordered conditions and all aftercare/community requirements. Families receiving assistance benefits should also be aware that if a youth residing in the home is not in compliance, the family’s benefits may be interrupted.

Parents or youth with questions should contact: Roderick Milstead with DYRS (202) 340-2155 or John Smith with CSSD (202) 508-8285 or (202) 498-6720.
