2025 SYEP Showcase

Friday, August 29, 2025 - 10:45am

Collage of pictures showcasing colorful bird houses and custom-made shelves. A girl sits by her art, a sculpture of a woman made of paper and a painting of a white tiger with black stripes. A cartoonish painting of the DC skyline with the words DYRS is the heart of the city, and a group of girls showcasing their creations from the Fashion Design Program.

On August 1, the Achievement Centers lit up the Woolly Mammoth Theatre with the annual Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Showcase.

Youth participants from the Visual Arts, Architecture, and Fashion Design programs proudly displayed their stunning creations in the theatre’s vibrant lobby. Family members, staff, and community members gathered in admiration, asking questions, taking photos, and marveling at the way each design reflected powerful stories, imagination, and self-expression.

The festive energy was matched by the delicious food, courtesy of LaTicia Moffitt’s catering, making the pre-show exhibit a true feast for the senses.

Then came the highlight of the evening: a moving live performance by the Drama Program students, directed by the passionate and inspiring Jawaun Hill, and proudly introduced by Workforce Development Program Manager Terrence Gunthrope, SYEP coordinator Ashley Jones, and DYRS Director Sam Abed. The student-written acts were rich with raw emotion, humor, and honesty, bringing laughter, tears, and thunderous applause from the crowd.

A heartfelt thank you to all the instructors, DYRS staff, families, and our incredible DC community for empowering and standing by our youth every step of the way.
