Deputy Mayor for Education Paul Kihn and Director of Strategic Initiatives for Youth Safety Phillip Copeland recently visited the Maya Angelou School at New Beginnings.
Social Studies and History teacher Leila Ali led a meaningful discussion with her students and the notable visitors. Students asked meaningful questions about the role of the Deputy Mayor and how his experiences abroad and in other jurisdictions influence his work.
Our youth voiced deep concerns about safety near schools and while commuting. They emphasized the need for stronger police presence around school perimeters and safer, more accessible transportation options that don’t require long walks from home.
Mr. Copeland assured the students that their voices are truly valued and taken to heart. He explained how his office is actively collaborating with other agencies, community organizations, and the police department to improve safety systems for youth, and that he will share their feedback with key stakeholders, highlighting the value of student input in shaping future policy.
Special thanks to Deputy Mayor Kihn and Director Copeland for their dedication to education reform and youth safety, and to the Maya Angelou School for fostering dialogues on civic engagement and public policy.
