DYRS is prohibited by law from disclosing confidential youth information to the media without the youth’s express written consent. This includes confirming or disclosing whether a person is in the care of this Agency. Specifically, DC Codes §§ 2-1515.06, 16-2331, and 16-2332 mandate the confidentiality of juvenile records and the confidentiality of any and all information pertaining to juveniles associated with the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services.

Unless agency pre-approval and express written permission are granted, media representatives are prohibited from filming, recording, or photographing the interior of any DYRS secure facility or from broadcasting, publishing, or putting to other uses consistent with media coverage any individual DYRS client’s name, face or other identifying characteristics.
